About this session
For many US applicants, the interview is the part of the application that feels least in their control. In practice it is usually a relaxed conversation, often with a graduate of the college, about what the student has done, what they are curious about, and why that college appeals to them. Most of the nerves come from not knowing what to expect.
This primer sets out what to expect. We will walk through the kinds of interviews US colleges offer, from alumni conversations to on-campus and virtual interviews, and what colleges say publicly about the part interviews play. Then we will focus on preparation that holds up under pressure: knowing your own work well enough to explain it simply, answering the question that was actually asked, thinking out loud when you are unsure, and asking good questions of your own. We will also cover the practical side of interviewing online.
Everything we share comes from what colleges publish and from general interview practice. It is not a mock interview, and it does not cover any university's confidential questions or scoring.
